Prenatal diagnosis involves obtaining fetal cells for chromosomal analysis to confirm or exclude specific genetic or chromosomal conditions before birth. These delicate procedures are performed with the utmost precision and care by Dr. Mathew Thomas, who completed his fellowship in fetal imaging and prenatal diagnosis at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi.
Amniocentesis
What is it?
Removal of a small amount (15–20 mL) of amniotic fluid containing fetal cells for genetic and chromosomal analysis. Performed under continuous real-time ultrasound guidance.
When is it done?
Usually at 15 to 18 weeks for genetic testing. Can also be done after 32 weeks in select cases (fetal lung maturity, infection).
Who needs it?
- High-risk NT scan or Dual Marker result
- Abnormal NIPT (NIPS) result
- Advanced maternal age (>35 years)
- Family history of chromosomal conditions
- Structural abnormality on anomaly scan
Safety
Procedure-related pregnancy loss: approximately 0.5% when performed by an expert under continuous ultrasound guidance.
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
What is it?
A biopsy of placental tissue (chorionic villi) for genetic analysis. Placental cells carry the same chromosomal makeup as the fetus.
When is it done?
Between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy — allowing a first trimester diagnosis.
Key Advantage
CVS can be performed 4–6 weeks earlier than amniocentesis, providing more time for counselling and decision-making. A critical advantage when a first trimester NT result is very high.
Technique
Performed transabdominally under continuous ultrasound guidance for precision and safety.

Undergoing a prenatal diagnostic procedure is often an anxious time. Dr. Mathew provides comprehensive pre- and post-procedure counselling — explaining indications, risks, the procedure itself, expected timelines for results, and interpretation of the genetic report. You will never receive a result without a full explanation and clear guidance on what it means for your pregnancy.
