Done at just 11 to 14 weeks, this relatively brief ultrasound can detect risk for serious chromosomal conditions, giving you time to make informed decisions.
What is the NT Scan?
NT stands for Nuchal Translucency — the fluid-filled space at the back of your baby's neck. All fetuses have this fluid naturally, but babies with chromosomal abnormalities tend to accumulate more of it. The NT scan precisely measures this thickness using ultrasound.
The measurement is then combined with your age, the baby's crown-rump length (CRL), and blood test results (PAPP-A and free beta-hCG) to calculate a personalized risk score for Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18), and Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13).
When is the Best Time for an NT Scan?
The NT scan must be performed between 11 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy. The ideal window is 12 to 13 weeks. Before 11 weeks, the baby is too small for an accurate measurement. After 14 weeks, the fluid is naturally absorbed by the lymphatic system, and the measurement is no longer meaningful.

What Does the NT Scan Detect?
Beyond the nuchal translucency measurement, a well-performed NT scan examines:
- Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) — the most common chromosomal condition
- Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18) — causes severe developmental problems
- Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13) — affects brain, heart, and other organs
- Early structural heart defects — the nasal bone and ductus venosus flow are assessed
- Twin complications — TTTS (Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome) screening in multiple pregnancies
- Early structural abnormalities of the brain and spine
What is the Normal NT Measurement?
An NT measurement below 2.5 mm is generally considered normal at most gestations in this window. However, the significance is always interpreted in context with the blood test results and your age. A slightly elevated measurement does not automatically mean there is a problem — it raises the risk level, which then determines whether further testing is recommended.
What Happens if the NT Scan Result is High?
An elevated NT measurement does not mean your baby has a chromosomal condition. It means the risk is higher than average, and further testing is available to get a definitive answer. Options include:
- NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) — a blood test that analyzes fetal DNA from your blood with very high accuracy (>99% for Down syndrome)
- Amniocentesis — directly sampling amniotic fluid for chromosomal analysis, 100% diagnostic accuracy
- CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling) — placental biopsy in the first trimester, also diagnostic
